Ken & Edith Platt

Ken Platt

Ken began his career in Scientific Glass in Fairfield, NJ in 1979 for a company that made glass laboratory apparatus for the rapidly growing semiconductor industry. He started as a cutter/washer, then moved to fire polishing and then working on a lathe. He found that working with glass came rather easy to him, learning to fabricate many different glass pieces used in the semiconductor industry. In 1984, he packed up what little belongings he had and moved to Silicon Valley in California, the center of the microchip industry where he learned new skills and techniques in working with glass. In 1990, he moved back to the East Coast, taking a job for an in house glass shop in Long Island, NY. His stay there was short and he reconnected with people he worked with in California who were now in Florida and then eventually back to Northern NJ.

After getting married he and his wife Edith had an idea for Ken to make Christmas Ornaments and sell them to customers at his sisters Christmas Tree Farm. From there they participated in a craft show at a local school and the journey as an artist began, growing his body of work and doing bigger and bigger events. In 2001, he left the Scientific Field behind and moved to the Eastern Shore of Virginia to the small town of Pungoteague. There, he and Edith opened up a Glass Blowing Studio that continues today.

Edith Platt

The Love to create started at a very early age. Her working career has been broad, from Marine Management, Sales, Sailing Instructor, Architectural Drafting & Design, Faux Finishing/Venetian Plaster.

When Edith met Ken and they married, she came to learn all about glass. Using her knowledge of design, her Warm Glass career began soon after Ken had taken a class in Warm Glass techniques. Not having the patience to work with a flame, this soon gave her the ability to create glass pieces. She too took a class in Warm Glass using techniques that have opened her eyes to endless possibilities.

With Ken’s vast knowledge of glass and the ability to create, Edith and Ken push the process in their 116 year old Carriage House/Studio in Pungoteague, VA.
